Sports start with a win
On a sunny but distinctly blowy day at the Weaver Stadium in Nantwich, Sports kicked off their 2016/17 season. Against last season’s top scorers you would have thought that we wouldneed to put on a strong defensive display and for most of the first half against a strong wind that was the case but having weathered the storm as the game wore on Sports took control and ran out deserved winners.
On 6 minutes a turn and shot by Stair drew an excellent save by King as the ball was arrowing into the top right corner of the goal. Nantwich’s Adabaki was looking lively in the early stages with Stair looking to turn and shoot on the edge of the box to take advantage of the strong breeze in his favour. But Sports’ centre backs were holding firm and once Adabaki had established that he couldn’t beat Turner for pace Ben started to diminish the threat of the Nantwich lad with some tenacious tackling.
White took the ball off Dales’ toe as he was about to shoot on 20 minutes and soon after a tremendous tackle by Broadhead broke down another dangerous Town attack.
Baskerville had been close with a free kick and after a Nantwich attack had been thwarted by the post and an offside decision, Adam put Sports ahead with a smart finish on 26 minutes from a cross by Dales and good work by Litchfield. If that was against the run of play a refereeing decision certainly evened things up .Less than 60 seconds after the goal a cracking challenge on the edge of the box was penalised and Stair bent the free kick over the wall to equalise. A dangerous cross from Bennett was too far ahead of the forwards as the first half ended tamely.

The early stages of the second half were equally cagey. On 51 minutes a short corner was worked via Mills across the face of goal then a speedy overlap by Bennett resulted in a cross to the far post where a desperate deflection by a Nantwich defender brought another Sports corner. But it was on 70 minutes that Sports retook the lead. The ball was worked from the left in a move involving several Sports forwards to the d of the penalty area and Broadhead placed his shot into the top corner. Again, straight after scoring Sports’ lack of concentration invited an equaliser. Stair wriggled free down the left and drew the keeper but King got a foot to his effort to concede a corner. But at this stage Sports were controlling the match. The wind was less of a factor and Sports superior football was reaping rewards. The Nantwich keeper Parton made a good point-blank save after Litchfield put Dales through on goal on 73 minutes and Andy compensated with a great recovery tackle to blunt an increasingly rare Nantwich foray which resulted in a disputed corner. Mills ended another attack in classy fashion and on 81 minutes Broadhead was booked for a challenge resulting an a free kick that was subsequently wasted by Nantwich. Then a great move by Litchfield put Baskerville in and his shot from inside the penalty area was somehow kept out by Parton’s outstretched leg. A great tackle by Dales and a good return pass by Baskerville then put in Dales who rounded the keeper and despite the best efforts of Nantwich’s Harrison, Andy walked the ball into the net. At that point there was no way back for Town and Sports comfortably saw out the win.
